Project Profile

Chicago Center for Green Technology

Chicago, Illinois

Size
34,000 SF
Completion
2002
Total Project Cost
$3 million
Project Scope
Mechanical, Plumbing, Commissioning

The third building in the United States to be certified LEED Platinum, this ground breaking renovation of a former brownfield site has received numerous awards, including ASHRAE’s prestigious First Place Technology Award. Today, the project serves as a national model of environmentally sensitive design and a resource for those wanting to learning more about sustainable technologies.

Sustainable Strategies
  • The Center uses 60% less energy than a typical building of the same size, saving an estimated $21,000 each year.
  • This is the first building in Chicago to utilize a geothermal heat pump system which helps regulate indoor air temperature by using the earth’s naturally constant ground temperature.
  • Solar panels over windows on the south and west facades provide shade, power and additional energy.
  • Air-to-air heat recovery pretreats the ventilation air and helps filter out contaminants to provide cleaner air while reducing energy demand for heating and cooling.
  • Mechanical equipment is integrated with the building automation system (BAS), carefully controlling equipment operation to minimize overall peak electricity demand.
  • Rainwater is collected for re-use in four cisterns, with a combined storage capacity of 12,000 gallons.
  • 1/3 of the roof is covered in sedum, a low growing plant that will reduce the heat island effect and help clean pollutants from the air.
