Project Profile

Bethel Commercial Center

Chicago, Illinois

Size
23,000 SF
Completion
2005
Total Project Cost
$3.5 million
Project Scope
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, Commissioning

Located on the corner of a significant rail stop, this new transit-oriented development on Chicago’s west side provides easy access to retail, community services and day care. Incorporating energy efficient systems and sustainable strategies, including a green roof and photovoltaic cells, this building is designed to Gold LEED® standards. The energy cost reduction is estimated to be 50% compared to average commercial buildings.

Sustainable Strategies
  • Variable Volume Air Distribution
  • Condensing Boiler coupled to Perimeter Hydronic Heat
  • Carbon Monoxide Monitoring
  • An enthalpy economizer for more efficient cooling and ventilation
  • Photovoltaic Cells
  • Air-to-air Heat Recovery
  • Automatic Electric Load Shedding
  • Daylighting and Occupancy Lighting Controls
  • A green roof, resulting in reduced storm water run-off and a decrease in heat absorption in the summer and heat loss in the winter.
  • Super insulated walls, the light color of the exterior building materials, and trees on site reduce heat absorption.
  • At least 25% of the building materials contain recycled content, and 20% of the materials were shipped from within 500 miles of Chicago.
  • 50% of the wood used on the project originated from forests grown and harvested using environmentally conscience methods.
