Project Profile

Washington Park Library

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Size
20,000 SF
Completion
2003
Total Project Cost
$4 million
Project Scope
Mechanical

The replacement of a crumbling 50-year library inspired this catalytic project, rejuvenating the surrounding neighborhood and creating a community gathering place. Washington Park Library is also one of the first public buildings in Milwaukee to utilize ground-source heat pumps. This, along with other sustainable strategies, is estimated to provide annual energy savings of about $15,000 compared to conventional systems.

Sustainable Strategies
  • The building’s orientation and siting were partly selected to maximize daylight penetration.
  • External sunshades and internal light shelves help control excessive light on the south exposure.
  • The interior spaces, in addition to utilizing low-VOC products and recycled materials, were carefully designed to provide an open, airy feeling yet the volume of the building itself was minimized to assist in energy efficiency.
  • Other energy savers: efficient glass, daylighting, automated lighting controls, total energy recovery, and geothermal heat pumps to reduce the energy usage of the building.
Awards
  • 2005 SE2 Leadership Award of Merit, Wisconsin Green Building Alliance (WGBA)
  • 2003 Best of 2003, Midwest Construction
